In recent AP Exams higher-scoring students deciphered the written document by picking up on useful information provided in the primary source material. These students also identified the historic setting of the document and/or recognized the stylistic movement referenced in the document. They then made a direct connection between analysis of the written document and the specific image(s). Some DBQs provide only text and no visuals. In this case, students are asked to select and fully identify an appropriate (and related) work of art from memory and to connect their analysis of the written document provided with their chosen "visual". This task is challenging for most students.
