The current model of including art from cultures outside the European tradition in the AP Art History course and exam is under review. Teachers should develop strategies to incorporate study of non-Western art (beyond ancient Near East, ancient Egypt, and the global Islamic tradition) throughout the course so students will have a better range of expression to address the first long-essay question on the exam. Students are not required to study all cultures beyond the European tradition. A thematic cross-cultural survey approach throughout the year, coupled with an in-depth concentration on one or two cultures outside the European tradition, provides students with a broad and global sense of art.
