- Teach students to decode each essay question by identifying a specific set of tasks. For example, what does the question ask the student to do? Name the artist and date the work? Discuss subject matter and iconography? Discuss the work¿s function and purpose? Explain the artist's style and technique?
- Train students to use graphic organizers in their writing process. This will help students articulate key concepts and think of ideas for performing each task, while forcing them to pause and reflect upon their responses. Using graphic organizers will also help students address time-management issues as they plan and write their essays.
- Return graded essays with the scoring guidelines attached so students can understand specific areas for improvement.
