The AP Laboratory Manual is produced so that students may have their own copy of laboratory instructions and complete lab work directly in the book, but many AP instructors feel that setting up and keeping a laboratory notebook is essential for students to learn about good scientific practices. Many colleges grant lab credit in addition to lecture credit only if students can produce a complete record of their lab experiences. On the other hand, some teachers feel the burden of grading so many lab reports is huge and the reward not worth the cost to other important classroom activities. The pros and cons are annually debated among the online AP Biology Electronic Discussion Group. See the AP Biology Course Home Page article
