Laboratory work is considered essential in an introductory college-level course, and the 12 labs suggested in the AP Lab Manual give an excellent overview of typical exercises. If a school is equipped to teach basic biology, chemistry and physics, most materials will probably be available. The most expensive components usually involve the biotechnology work since some electrophoresis equipment and power sources are necessary. Spectrophotometers are also pricey but many schools substitute colorimeters with a CBL system or forgo quantitative measurements for qualitative reports. Schools strapped for funds often share equipment with nearby neighbors or borrow from local colleges.
